Whenever data is transferred over the internet, it’s split up into multiple pieces of information by the internet protocol, these pieces of information are known as packets. Each individual packet is given headers that point to its destination (an IP address). The receiving end then recombines the packets through the use of the transmission control protocol.
Generally, sensitive information sent over the web is encrypted by one of the secure protocols, including HTTPS, SSL and TLS. By encrypting the information sent over the web, attackers are unable to view their contents, thus they can’t access the important data.
